Popsicle Stick Magnetic Hangman
The boys and I recently rolled our sleeves up and built a ceiling-to-floor magnetic wall. We love it. It’s fantastic to have such a large space to work with and it was much easier to build than I expected. I promise to share how we did that with you soon. Today, we’ll share the dual purposed magnets we made: Use these as magnets or to play Hangman!
Follow us below to learn how you can do this, too.
Materials:
– I pack of Popsicle Sticks (We made 24)
– Magnets (We used a magnetic tape that we cut to size and stick onto the backs of the popsicle sticks once we painted these. Any magnet that is smaller than a popsicle stick and will hold this weight, will work.)
– Spray Paint (You will need a spray paint that will stick to plastic. Check label and/or inquire at your hobby or hardware store.)
How to make:
– Magnets (We used a magnetic tape that we cut to size and stick onto the backs of the popsicle sticks once we painted these. Any magnet that is smaller than a popsicle stick and will hold this weight, will work.)
– Spray Paint (You will need a spray paint that will stick to plastic. Check label and/or inquire at your hobby or hardware store.)
– Painters mask (Work outside and wear a mask while spray painting)
– Masking Tape or Post-it Tape
– One or two set of Plastic Magnetic Letters
– One or two set of Plastic Magnetic Letters
(We used a copper spray paint)
How to make:
Using masking tape, block off areas of popsicle sticks. (We divided our sticks in thirds, by using a wider post-it tape that was 1/3 of the width of the sticks but, these could be divided in 4 or however you like.)
– In an area with good ventilation (outdoors is preferable) put on a painting mask and lay the items that will be spray painted flat.
– Shake the spray paint can very well and evenly paint the sticks and magnets.
– Let Dry.
– Remove the tape.
– Fix magnets to the back side of the popsicle sticks and you are ready to play Hangman or to use these as magnets.
(Note: to play Hangman, you will need the letter “o” for the head.)
We hope that you have fun with this, too. Use your imagination. I can imagine these in lots of colours, even multicoloured. As always, I love to see what you do with this tutorial and wish you happy making.
Let dry.
(Note to those with young children:
The spray paint is only necessary if you would like to paint the plastic letters. like we did. You do not have to use spray paint. Just use plastic letters, straight out of the package and paint popsicle sticks with a paint brush and non-toxic paint. If you would like to paint the plastic magnetic letters, then it is necessary to use spray paint that will coat and stay affixed to plastic, making these paints non-adviseable for small children.
If you have older kids, purchase painting masks at your local hardware store and set the kids up in an open area and let them paint away!)
